We had an awesome class party. Our theme was Christmas, we had Secret santas, plenty of kai and to cool off in the afternoon, we went for a swim to Riverside.

Whanau day out term 3

Kia ora koutou,
At the end of last term we had a whanu day out. We started off with a shared kai at school, before participating in some circuits with the rest of Te Pouahi. We left for the pool about 1pm.

Once we got to the pool, we got into our swimming togs. We then had to listen to the rules of the pool from the life guard and we found out that we were only allowed to swim in the deep end if we could swim a length of the pool.

Tangram challenge

One of our math activities have been to do with Tangrams. We have to try and form different Tangram shapes using only one set of Tangram pieces. Each set has 7 pieces.

Once wed have made a picture we have to put our name by the picture and take a photo with the digital camera.

Our soccer skills

The last 3 Friday's at 9:45am, Te Pouahi 17 have been going around to the front of the school ground to learn some soccer skills from a skilled soccer player called Jordan. He has taught us many skills from dribbling the ball, to stopping the ball, bouncing the ball off our heads, knees and feet. We have also learnt many games like Fox Tail, Rob the Nest and soccer itself. We have really learning these soccer skills and we have had a lot of fun too. Inquiry into food properties

Throughout the term, our inquiry learning has been all about food properties. The last couple of weeks we have been discussing protein and starches inside some of food we eat. We are also learning the different states of food, Solids, Liquids and Gases and how heat affects the properties of food. We always look forward to Friday's as this is our cooking day and we get to experiment with different food properties. The next couple of weeks we will spend some time looking at fats and oils. Here are a few photos of when we were conducting an experiment using protein (egg),with the microwave, stove with water and stove with oil as the heat source.

The Warriors visit to Nelson Central School

While we were celebrating Matariki, two players from the Warriors league team visited our school!

Simon Mannering and Micheal Luck arrived just as we were getting our shared kai. Most Whaea in Te Pouahi were lucky enough to get some photos with them and get some things signed.

Some children were very lucky to win some prizes that the Warriors players were giving away also!

Celebrating Matariki with the whole school.

On Friday the 18th of June, Nelson Central school celebrated Matariki. Each syndicate stood up on the front steps and sung some waiata. Te Pouahi then lead the school with a karakia and then we were allowed to eat. There was so much kai to choose from. Te Pouahi got to get their kai first and then the rest of the syndicates followed! There was that much kai that we even got to go up for 2nds, 3rds and 4ths if we wanted to!!!

We had lots of fun celebrating Matariki with the rest of Nelson Central.

What is Matariki?
Matariki is the Maori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades star cluster or The Seven Sisters; also what is referred to as the Traditional Maori New Year.
When is the Maori New Year?
The Maori New Year is marked by the rise of Matariki and the sighting of the next new moon. The pre-dawn rise of Matariki can be seen in the last few days of May every year and the New Year is marked at the sighting of the next new moon which occurs during June.

What does Matariki mean?
Matariki has two meanings, both referring to a tiny constellation of stars; Mata Riki (Tiny Eyes) and Mata Ariki (Eyes of God).

Why is Matariki important?
Traditionally, depending on the visibility of Matariki, the coming season's crop was thought to be determined. The brighter the stars indicated the warmer the season would be and thus a more productive crop. It was also seen as an important time for family to gather and reflect on the past and the future.

Why do we celebrate Matariki today?
Today Matariki means celebrating the unique place in which we live and giving respect to the land we live on.

For children Matariki is an important time to learn about whakapapa (ancestry), the land, the stars, and what it is to be Maori.
The Matariki stars were used to navigate, to keep time, know what season they were in, and to learn about the legends of the stars.
Learning about family and whakapapa was also very important around the time of Matariki. It was time to come together to exchange stories, learn about ancestors who have passed from this world to the next, and hand down knowledge and practices to ensure the Maori culture is preserved.
The land and the preserving of it was a big part of Matariki, crops were being planted for the next season, and learning about the land and forest was essential for everyone.

Matariki is a time when children can learn about and celebrate the unique culture that they are a part of through school, family and friends

Matariki signals a time of coming together of family and friends, to share in food, festivities, and fun. Families gathered to perform songs and haka, weave, carve, and prepare food delicacies, hunt and fish.

When Matua Manihera came for a visit!

Te Pouahi were lucky enough to have Matua Manihera come and visit us. He is an expert about Waka and Navigation. He showed us many slides of waka and how navigation works. We felt really lucky to be able to have him share his knowledge with us. He tested us on some of the Maori kupu for the stars and for the compass directions! Some of us knew the Maori kupu but some of us had some new learning!

Matua Manihera was able to answer the many questions we had for him. We found out where the navigator sits on the waka hourua, where the crew sleep, and what food they eat. Matua even told us that it takaes 2 weeks to sail to Tonga from Aotearoa, 2 weeks to sail to Tahiti and then a month to sail to Hawaii!

We really liked one of his saying's "If you look after your waka, your waka will look after you".

Poi Making

Our class has been learning to make poi as part of our inquiry learning about Natural resources. Our Poi weren't made out of natural resources as such, they were made out of more modern day materials like wool, material and plastic. We worked in our inquiry groups to make Poi. Two people had to plait the four plait and two people had to have turns at holding the poi. We have learnt how Poi were made in the olden days and what they were used for. We learnt that poi are used more these days for performing kapahaka. We have watched a famous kapahaka group perform their Poi on You Tube. The group was called Patea. Their poi waiata was very catchy and we liked to follow their actions.

We are learning actions to go with the waiata "Purea Nei".

Heritage Trail

Last Friday Te Pouahi 16 and 17 took part in the Heritage trail. Our first stop was at the Alton street panel. Here we saw what Alton street looked like many years ago. We also saw what Nelson Central use to look like. It wasn't as big as it is now! We also noticed the Lime trees and the Redwood trees have definitely grown!! We were very interested in hearing about the Griffins factory that use to be across the road from Nelson Central! Whaea Erina remembers the Griffins Factory. She even got to go to the factory with one of her teachers once and returning to school with a bag full of Pineapple Lumps!!! We thought she was very lucky!

Next we walked to Bishops School. Here we got to compare how this school was different to ours. Mr Goodman answered many of our questions. We were really interested hearing about the strap, having to have our fingernails and shoes inspected each day and Mr Goodman even rung the school bell for us! The rules for a teacher were very interesting too.

St Patrick's Day

Dia duit...Kia ora...Hello

Today was St Patrick's day and we are lucky enough to have two children in Te Pouahi that are part Irish! Anne and Adam came to school dressed up today in Green clothes and also wore really funky hats! They looked like real Leprechauns! They explained to us that it is a family tradition to celebrate St Patrick's day. They even treated us to some Irish dancing. They work so well together when they dance. Thank you and Ka pai Anne and Adam, we really enjoyed watching you both do your Irish dancing :)

Te Pouahi Swimming Sports

Today was our Te Pouahi swimming sports. Although there were a few nerves, we all had so much fun. There were many races consisting of Freestyle, Breaststroke, backstroke and there was also an open race of 3 lengths. Most of us participated in the novelty events. There was a Truck and Trailer race, Noodle race and longest standing handstand and Starfish! Check out some of our photos from our day!

Today in our ICT time we used a programme called Wordle. We needed a bit of help from Whaea Erina and Whaea Tania when it came to saving and publishing our wordles onto our blog. We really enjoyed changing the colour, fonts and layout of our wordles. It was fun writing a lot of words that related to ME!
